| 1) Starvation – Topping removes so much of the limbs and the tree crown that it in fact cuts off its food making ability.
2) Shock – By removing so much of the tree, the remaining bark tissue is so exposed that sun scalding may result which causes major dieback and even death .
3) Insect and Disease – The stubs and actual wounds are highly vulnerable to insect invasion and the wind blown spores of decay fungi. Leading to premature decline and death.
4) Weak limbs- The new limbs that come back are more weakly attacked than a limb that develops more normally. Which physically makes it more vulnerable to winds and or snow and ice loads.
5) Rapid new growth – The new sprouts (often called water sprouts) grow so rapidly that they become less stable. Once again leading the tree into a hazardous life cycle.
6) Tree death – Some trees, Beeches for example do not sprout readily after being topped and with the reduced foliage it often results in death.
7) Ugliness - A topped tree is a disfigured tree. Nobody should want or need a 25 foot hat rack in their yard.
8) Cost – The true cost of topping are hidden. They include reduced property value, expense of removal and replacement and the risk of liability if it fails. Also remember in most Municipalities now it is illegal to top trees that are in the areas between the sidewalk and the street, no matter who paid for or planted the tree.
There are some companies that go from door to door soliciting tree work. The door to door companies often do sub-standard work leaving the trees prone to risk and decay. Also in most cases they do not carry the proper Insurance or Workers Compensation needed to not only make their employees safe but the customer safe as well. It is extremely important to have a Certified Arborist, look at your trees from time to time. Prevention is always the best cure to storm damage protection, hazard abatement and liability loses. In most states now it is the homeowners responsibility to insure a duty of care to the public and to their neighbors. If the tree is large or off the ground, or if a chainsaw is needed, it is always best to hire a professional Tree Service Contractor. The very dangerous nature of tree work is not ever worth saving the money and put yourself or other loved ones into what can be a very dangerous situation. The estimate is always free so go ahead and take advantage of it. E-MAIL Link |
